Simi Valley Education Foundation Awards
More Than $55,000 Enhancement Grants
95 Grants Awarded at 29 Local Public Schools

The Simi Valley Education Foundation is pleased to announce that more than $55,000 for Enhancement Grants was awarded to 29 local public schools. 

The Simi Valley Education Foundation’s mission is to enrich and maximize the quality of education in the Simi Valley public schools by providing financial support for programs that assist in achieving academic excellence. The Foundation, as well as the businesses and individuals who support it, believes that innovative and creative approaches to teaching can benefit our students. To this end, the Foundation developed the Enhancement Grant Program and this year 95 grants were funded.

This program, with its emphasis on INNOVATIVE PROJECTS and CREATIVE TEACHING APPROACHES, provides funding, not otherwise available, for projects that have a potential to enhance the learning process. These grants are made possible through donations made by community members, parents, businesses, and special fundraising events.

In awarding grants, the Foundation seeks innovative projects or programs which meet the following criteria:

  • Affect as many students as possible and benefit a diverse student group
  • Involve students as much as possible
  • Supplement and/or enhance the standard curriculum and ordinary teaching methods
  • Support a program or project with measurable results
  • Are creative and innovative
  • Promote inter-classroom, interdisciplinary and/or joint teacher projects

ENHANCEMENT GRANT GUIDELINES

1. Consideration is given to applications that are organized, well written, researched and easy to read.

2. Grant requests should supplement and/or enrich the current curriculum and reflect a need that is not being met by existing programs or by the Simi Valley Unified School District.

3. School or team proposals (those affecting either an entire grade or subject level or the entire school population) are encouraged, as are individual teacher proposals.

4. The standards to be employed in evaluation of grant applications will be broad in nature. Grant applications must demonstrate innovative and effective ways to meet student needs and increase motivation to learn.

5. All grant applications must be signed by the applicants’ principal.

6. We do not fund salaries, field trips (including transportation) or technology hardware and other equipment, including computers, LCD projectors, ELMO’s, printers and cameras.

More Than $72,000 Awarded in Enhancement Grants 85 Grants include 25 Schools

The Simi Valley Education Foundation is pleased to announce that more than $72,000 for Enhancement Grants was awarded to 25 local public schools.

This year the grants encompassed a variety of subject areas including:

  • Elementary Quiz Bowl for 10 schools
  • Second Step Character Education—integrating academics with social and emotional learning
  • Visual and Performing Arts Programs
  • Take home literacy programs to involve parents, math project for families and a Parent Resource Library
  • Sensory integration equipment to enhance academic routine
  • Reader’s Theater for fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development
  • Writer’s Workshop/Six Traits of Writing
  • Language arts augmented through poetry, songs, music and plays
  • Learning centers in math and English
  • Reading comprehension materials and math games
  • Carousel of ideas – use of language to improve communication and problem solving
  • Instructional material for ESL and special needs students
  • Reference books in English, history and contemporary issues
  • Art programs
  • Building school libraries by purchasing reading books for all grade levels
  • Differentiated hands-on language and science centers
  • High School physical science lab enhancements
  • Telescopes for middle school science
  • Text-to-Speech Software
  • English, math and science software
